Friday 4th September
Today we walked down to the main Waikiki Beach with Bruce and Linda hoping to get a ride on one of the above canoes but unfortunately the waves were too big for surfing in on the waves. They take you out everyone paddling then turn round and wait for the best wave to surf in. But today they said it wasn't safe enough. We have been told that the waves are a lot bigger than usual due to all the hurricanes that have been circulating the Hawaiian Islands. These have been causing all sorts of problems with the weather patterns eg. the very heavy rains in Honolulu which we saw when we went to the Arizona memorial on Thursday which didn't really hit where we are and the rough seas bringing in the big waves. The surfers love it. And also the high humidity and very hot conditions much more than normal.
Main Waikiki Beach looking west. There were some big dumper waves coming in but I seemed to miss them in this shot.
Looking towards the East. Dave and Jen remember Ernie could be just over that wall!!!!!
Tree lit up in the courtyard of the hotel. Lights wrapped around its trunk and around all its branches. There are leaves above that. This tree was planted some 50 years ago by the then Chinese owner.
Friday night fireworks which are put on every Friday around the lagoon just beside our hotel put on by the Hilton Hotel. Much more spectacular than the photos show, huge.
Saturday 5th September
This morning went for a walk along to Ala Moana park. Busy as it is Labour weekend here bringing all the locals out for their big picnics. They arrive with big containers of food and make a day of it with all the families. Not sure who the above limo was waiting for wouldn't have been the locals.
Walked right out to the end of the park where there is a nice beach enclosed by the water breaks. These are the big rolling waves coming in as I said yesterday due to the hurricanes at sea.
Beach at the end of the park where the break water is.
Chap fishing out at the point.
Walking back down the other side of the park towards Ala Moana beach. The rolling waves not usually this big in this area.
Not sure what happened with this shot. Seemed to have ended up with two PT's (without a head) and two of someone else.!!!! Ala Moana in the back ground. Note how wet the paths are that's from the waves coming over.
Look at my pot. PT
Ala Moana Park
Canoes coming into the harbour after battling the big waves.
Smaller canoes in the shelter of the harbour.
This is the catchment filter that catches all the rubbish that comes down from the hills behind us in the heavy rains, like they had before we came up. The authorities seem to take their time clearing it out. They are meant to catch the rubbish to stop it getting into the boat harbour but it never catches it all in these heavy rains.
Fathers day in NZ. Went out to dinner with Linda and Bruce and had a great evening. Still so hot.....
Dave and Jen remember those triple stack pancakes I used to have as big as dinner plates. The waitress ask me did I want a big one or a small one, I reply just a small one but look at it. Dad helped me eat it after he had eaten his pud. That is two pancakes. Linda couldn't eat all of hers so asked for a doggy box to take away... My cocktail was rum and pineapple, yum. Linda and I had three of those!!!!!!!!
