When we arrived in our unit 1580 last night forgot to say yesterday that these beautiful real flowers (not plastic) from Kama the owner of the condo as well as a box of chocolates. Kama was the owner of the condo at The Ilikai Hotel room 2008 whom we dealt with two years ago. Nice thought.
Today we caught the bus about four stops which got us to the far end of Ala Moana beach. Walked out to the boat harbour then through another park to the entrance of the harbour, which is near Honolulu. Honolulu buildings in the back ground. Then we walked back to our unit along Ala Moana Beach. Quite a long walk back in this heat.
In behind these boats on the park area were at least 50 homeless folk with their meagre belongings. They have tents and shelters and it is quite depressing to see them. At present the local council is having a blitz on their living in these areas but they are just moving from one park to the next. They certainly leave a lot of mess and you can understand the council's strong measures. Apparently Hawaii has the highest percentage of homeless people in the US.
Mouth of the boat harbour
Mouth of the boat harbour on the other side. About 100m wide.
Just a bit out to sea from the entrance of the harbour the surfers were out trying to catch a good wave.
We started our walk back, along the beach, guys on surf boards standing up paddling in the shelter of the surf. And photo below. Western end of the beach. Far end from were we are staying.
Still walking looking towards the east end. Diamond Head in the background, Ilikai is just to the left of picture still a way to walk, Ala Moana Beach Park behind the water where we walked out to several days ago when the big waves were coming over the break waters.
Looking back the other way to the west were we have just walked from from the far point top left and we are still only about half way.
Bruce and Linda you will recognize this boat. Everyone else its the dinner boat that goes up and down the coast line most of the day for meal trips .
another looking east.
PT stopping to talk to the locals as he does.
Just a wider view of the beach and park eastern end.
Back at our unit looking over to where we had just walked from. The far point top left, through the first park along the beach, through the next park in foreground, along the road which you can't see. A big walk a lot further than it looks. Taken from our deck zoomed in a little.
This is looking the other way to the lagoon again zoomed in a little.
Standing on our deck, lagoon to the left past the boat harbour, Ala Moana beach park and way in the distance the point where we started our walk this morning is the furthest bit of land you can see in the distance. It looks a long walk when you don't look at zoomed in photos. Also you will notice how brown the boat harbour looks. This is because we got very heavy rain up in the mountains behind last night. All the storm water has to go down hill and through the boat harbour bringing with it all the rubbish, mud, big pieces of tree branches etc. A terrible sight for all new tourists that are arriving as they probably think it is always like this. Bruce and Linda its heaps worse from when you were here. And also no sunsets since you went. Not sure if we will get any good ones before we go which will be unusual. Usually you get them most nights. We have seen real beauties in the past years really bright oranges and reds.
This is taken looking straight down from our balcony to show how close we are to the boat harbour. Just a minor road between our building and the boats. And I can assure you the water doesn't usually look this colour. When it gets like this it will take days to clear as the tides don't have fall and rise as in NZ to flush it out, therefore nothing moves quickly to take the rubbish and mud look away.
After the long walk.
This is taken with me hanging over the side of our balcony, (which is tiny,) showing how far we have shifted. The Ilikai Hotel is the second building from the left with the bluey green panels on the decks and yes Jen you will pick up I have horizons issues but when you have to lean out over a tiny balcony fifteen floors up you are not thinking about horizons issues. You are just thinking about hanging on to your phone. That poor boat harbour when you compare with the blue water in the lagoon and sea. Lets hope it will wash out soon.
